Venus and Moon, May 2023

Starlog May 22nd, 2023, 8:42 p.m. local time

This evening’s sky was even clearer than the night’s prior, though there were hints of clouds in the Northwest.  Fortunately, tonight was the show of the week with Venus and the Moon in close proximity.

I only used my Canon EOS with longest lens, widened enough to get both bright objects in the same frame. I manually focused, leveraging a closeup of the Moon to get the image as clear as reasonably possible, before widening out again.

By tomorrow night, the Moon will appear well past Venus, and I will have decisions to make, weather permitting, on which Solar System object to photograph on a given evening. Time is tight for me right now and I prefer to not build multiple equipment setups outside at the same time.

Equipment Used:

  • Canon EOS Rebel SL3
  • f/4
  • 1/8 sec exposure
  • ISO 100
  • 300mm lens, 75mm focal length
  • Touchups in PaintShop Pro and AfterShot Pro
