Venus on June 9th, 2023
Here is Venus through my homemade Dobsonian telescope, on a clear and warm late Spring evening in June, about 50 minutes after Sunset.

A clear sky showed the prime event of the week – Venus and the Moon in proximity after Sunset. Photographed with my Canon EOS SL3.
It was finally time to photograph Venus once again, close up. Over the past several years I have posted Venus “cameos” where the planet was a dot in the sky, maybe next to the Moon, for example. But here, finally, I used my Mak-Cass to pinpoint on Venus and nothing else.
Sometimes there are appointments and commitments that interrupt even my astronomy hobby on important dates. This past Wednesday was one such occurrence. For despite the close approach of Jupiter and Venus and the remarkably clear skies (minus wisps of clouds), I was unable to be anywhere near my telescope or to have a passable astrophoography camera setup to record the event.
A view over my house of Jupiter and Venus close in the sky, after Sunset on February 26th, 2023.
As promised, the Moon has appeared to creep closer to Venus.
This is a rare view of the Moon. Looking through my archives, the only time I photographed a similar phase was after the 2017 Solar Eclipse.
So I did what any amateur astrophotographer would do…I got out my iPhone, set it to “Pano” mode, and took the accompanying long picture.
I intentionally rerouted my evening walk so I could get a better perspective on both the Moon and Venus.
Inspired by other blogs such as Heads UP! taking cool pictures of Venus near the Pleiades, I knew I had to get in on the action myself.
